Succinylation modification is a type of post-translational modification in which succinyl groups (- CO-CH2-CH2-CO2H) are attached to the lysine side chain amino groups of protein molecules. Succinylation modification has been found on many proteins, including histones. Although the biological function of succinylation modification remains to be studied, the charge of lysine linked succinyl groups (under physiological pH conditions) changes from+1 to -1, and the succinyl group (100Da) is larger than the acetyl group (42 Da) and methyl group (14 Da). Therefore, it is inferred that succinylation modification may cause greater changes in protein structure and function.
